Compare five classes, choose a squad for the mission, and check how leveling, recruitment and soldier customization work.

Update 1.0.2 · Reviewed September 29, 2026
Yes. Warhounds Update 1.0.2, released September 24, 2026 (UTC), adds class selection for rookies. This is now a released feature, replacing the earlier roadmap-only answer.
The announcement does not document the menu sequence, a class-change fee or the ability to reclassify existing veterans. Do not use the Barracks rename button as evidence of class selection.

Direct answer
The five officially named Warhounds classes are Assault, Specialist, Sniper, Machine Gunner and Grenadier. For a first squad, our recommendation is to cover different engagement ranges and preserve enough healthy operators for the next deployment. Verify each candidate’s actual weapon, skills and restrictions in the loadout screen.
Connect roster choices to the beginner mission loop and the base and recovery systems.
Compare the current weapon, movement options and mission range before choosing the operator.
Read the available abilities and equipment. Choose the tools that fill a gap in your plan.
The developer describes sniper rifles as single-shot weapons. Check range and the aiming panel.
Compare the current weapon range and burst behavior with the firing lanes you expect.
Read current equipment descriptions and check nearby friendly positions before using an explosive.
Selection prompts, not a tested tier ranking. Current loadouts and tooltips decide the details.
The Steam store class list names all five classes and recommends mission-specific equipment. Developer FAQ, question 4 confirms that leveling improves stats according to class; it gives no per-level values or complete skill tree. The Sniper card uses the August 19 ballistics explanation, which describes the weapon rather than every Sniper ability. These public sources were checked on September 22, 2026.
There is no verified universal best class. The useful choice is the operator who solves your next mission’s problem without leaving a critical gap. Treat the following as a selection checklist rather than a tested tier ranking.
Use four questions before deployment: which ranges must the squad cover, how will it create or break cover, which tools are needed for information or concealment, and which operative is essential to the plan? The class names imply broad battlefield functions, but this guide deliberately avoids assigning unverified abilities to them.
In Warhounds for Windows, sniper rifles fire one bullet; other weapons fire a number of bullets determined by weapon type and level. Each bullet has its own hit roll. This is the rule described in the developer’s August 19 ballistics post, checked on September 22, 2026. It describes weapons, not a complete list of class skills or a guarantee about future balance updates.
Compare range before class. Aim at the target and read the right-side hit breakdown. Every weapon type has an optimal engagement range; the class name alone does not tell you whether this particular shot is favorable.
For a sniper rifle, one missed bullet means that shot does not hit its intended target. A burst has multiple separate rolls, but that does not guarantee more damage. Compare the weapon and ability values shown in your build before spending AP.
Change the angle before assuming you need more shots. Cover can turn successful hits into reduced-damage grazes. Our recommendation is to compare a flank or clearer line in the aiming panel before replacing an operator solely for a larger burst.
Do not multiply the displayed chance by the number of bullets and call it a guaranteed result. The developer has not published a universal damage formula.
Check the path beyond the target. Missed bullets keep travelling and can hit allies or objects. Before firing either a sniper rifle or a burst weapon, inspect where a miss could go and reposition if the line is unsafe.
Our selection rule: choose the available operator who can take a useful shot without routing bullets through a teammate. This is a conditional decision, not a fixed squad composition.
Read the developer-backed hit, graze and friendly-fire explanation. For a Sniper ability that shows unexpected AP costs, check the Hotfix #6 status.
Illustrative decision, not an in-game test. Assume one operator has a burst weapon facing a target in full cover, another has a sniper rifle at a different angle, and an ally is near a possible miss path. Compare these available positions using the documented rules; this example does not prescribe a named operator or promise a kill.
Basis: developer aiming-panel FAQ and cover and miss-path rules, checked on September 22, 2026. The decision order is our editorial interpretation.
Fill this out from the briefing and current in-game tooltips before choosing operators. The worksheet is deliberately class-neutral because the approved public sources do not document every specialization or ability.
| Question | What to check | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Engagement space | Expected ranges, lines, elevation and cover conditions | Mission briefing and tactical preview |
| Information | Whether the plan needs scouting, scanning or concealment tools | Current equipment and class descriptions |
| Terrain response | How the squad can create, deny or survive exposed lines | Loadout screen and confirmed combat systems |
| Roster risk | Which loss or injury would damage later missions most | Roster, medical and contract screens |
| Extraction | What the team needs if the first plan fails | Mission rules shown in the installed version |
A completed worksheet supports a deliberate choice; it does not turn that choice into a universal best composition. Use the combat evidence page for battlefield concepts and the base guide for roster consequences.
The official game website advertises ten unique veterans with distinct traits, stories and abilities, plus a wider recruit pool. Steam’s public achievements include “Gang’s All Here” for hiring all veterans and “All the King’s Men” for hiring the maximum number of soldiers. For the recruiting achievement not unlocking, Hotfix #6 lists a specific fix; see the versioned status.
According to the developer FAQ, regular soldiers can be customized in the Locker Room or through Change Appearance on their character card. To rename a soldier, open the Barracks and use the edit button beside their name at the top.
Veterans have special skins, but the FAQ does not allow the same appearance customization as regular recruits. The announced September update includes new customization options; keep those plans separate from what is available now.
